Master Your Security at Ledger.com/start

The ultimate guide to initializing your Ledger hardware wallet. Secure your digital legacy with the world's most trusted cold storage solution.

Secure

Why Choose a Hardware Wallet?

In the rapidly evolving world of cryptocurrency, security is paramount. A Ledger hardware wallet acts as a personal vault for your digital assets. Unlike software wallets that are constantly connected to the internet (hot wallets), Ledger devices keep your private keys offline (cold storage).

When you visit Ledger.com/start, you begin the journey of taking true ownership of your financial freedom. By isolating your keys from your computer or smartphone, you become immune to online hacks, phishing attempts, and malware that target digital funds.

  • Offline storage of private keys
  • Physical confirmation for every transaction
  • Support for 5,500+ coins and tokens

The Guide

Complete Setup Walkthrough

Follow these precise steps to initialize your device safely. Always ensure you are in a private, secure environment before beginning.

01

Unbox & Verify

Open your Ledger box. It should contain the device, a USB cable, and recovery sheets. Important: The device should NOT have a PIN code preset, and the recovery sheets must be blank. If they are filled out, do not use the device.

02

Visit Ledger.com/start

Open your browser and navigate to the official URL: ledger.com/start. Download the Ledger Live application for your operating system (Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, or Android).

03

Initialize Device

Connect your Ledger to your computer. Follow the on-screen instructions on the device. Select "Set up as new device" using the buttons to navigate.

04

Set PIN Code

Choose a PIN code (4 to 8 digits). This code unlocks your device physically. Make it hard to guess but easy for you to remember. You will need this every time you plug in your Ledger.

05

Record Recovery Phrase

Your device will display 24 words one by one. Write them down in exact order on the provided recovery sheet. This is your master key. If you lose your device, these words are the ONLY way to restore your funds.

NEVER store these words digitally (no photos, no cloud, no password managers).
06

Verify & Install Apps

The device will ask you to confirm the words to ensure you wrote them down correctly. Once verified, open Ledger Live, complete the security checklist, and start installing apps (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.) to create accounts.

Power & Security Combined

Frequently Asked Questions

Critical Security Warning

NEVER share your 24-word recovery phrase with anyone. Ledger support will never ask for it. If anyone asks for your recovery phrase, they are trying to steal your funds.

Always verify you are on the official website. Phishing sites often look identical to the real thing. The only official place to download Ledger Live is https://www.ledger.com/start.
